Today, Thursday 5 November, is not just about fireworks and bonfires it’s also one of our favourite days of the year — it’s Outdoor Classroom Day. This means that millions of children in the UK and around the world will be going outside with their teachers or parents and jumping in puddles, collecting leaves and generally getting down with nature. What’s not to love?

It would be great if you could help us spread the word by encouraging any children or teachers you know to check out the website for a whole host of ideas for simple things to do on Outdoor Classroom Day — even if you can’t get outside! Share your adventure and tag it #LoveTheOutdoors. It can be as simple as planting a seed or going for a walk to really look at the Autumn leaves. Over 150,000 seedballs have been given away to be planted today — these small but important connections between children and nature instil a love for it and a long-lasting desire to protect it.

Why are we making such a fuss about going outside — don’t people do this normally? The sad truth is that children all around the world are spending less and less time outside — in the UK over 50% of children spend less time outside than prisoners do. It’s shocking, especially as we know how incredibly important going outdoors is for our mental health, our physical health and for making us feel happier.

Sadly in the UK there are over 4.2 million children who live in poverty and for these kids, when the cold weather arrives, they often end up stuck indoors because their parents can’t afford to provide them with outdoor kit that will keep them warm and dry. Teachers have told us that if they could have access to wet weather gear at school, they’d be able to get loads more children outside. So we’ve launched a crowdfunder to source sets of high quality clothing that will last a school for 5 years and give thousands of children the chance to benefit from being able to play and learn outdoors. Please share with your networks and on social media using #OutdoorClassroomDay!

Thanks to Unilever for sponsoring this campaign and thanks to you for sharing it. And now, please go outside and conker!
